St. Michael's Respect Life Ministry
We are all created in God's image. St.
Michael's parish is dedicated to upholding the value and dignity
of all human life — especially the unborn, the weak, the
sick, the disabled, the abused, and the elderly. Through service
and education we hope to promote respect for all human life throughout
our parish, commmnity, the nation and the world. "Truly,
I say to you, as often as you did it to one of my the least of
my brethren, you did it to me."
(Matthew 25:40)
Why is the Catholic Church such a strong pro-life
voice?
The reasons are not difficult to understand. One official Church
document on the subject puts it this way:
The first right of the human person is his life...It does
not belong to society, nor does it belong to public authority
in any form to recognize this right for some and not for others;
all discrimination is evil...
Any discrimination based on the various stages of life is
no more justified than any other discrimination.... In reality,
respect for human life is called for tfrom the time the process
of generation begins. From the time that the ovum is fertiized,
a life is begun which is neither that of the father nor of
the mother; it is rather the life of a new human being with
his own growth.
Declaration on Procured Abortion, Congregation
for the Doctrine of the Faith (1974), paragraphs 11-12.
It is not just about abortion, but also end of life decisions,
assisted suicide, euthanasia, and now embryonic stem cell and
human cloning experimentation.
Pride sets subtle snares.
Whenever we imagine that we are in control of life — we
have fallen prey to the ancient whisper in the Garden: "You
shall be like gods." Mortality is the enduring reminder that
we become like God not by our own power but by the power of the
cross.
(Magnificat, February 8, 2001)
In recent years, decisions have been made in courtrooms across
the country regarding a life and death issue that has far-reaching
implications for our society. In an increasing number of instances,
at the behest of well-meaning family members or legally designated
surrogates, judges are ruling that non-dyring patients may be
put to death.
Those of us who oppose this practice feel strongly that these
decisions and the precedents they establish raise a number of
profoundly disturbing questions regarding the worth of an individual
life in our society.
