On October 26, 1980, a small group of parishioners gathered in
the gymnasium of Smoky Hill High School to seal their Parish Covenant
with God in a day long celebration. This unique project, the idea
of founding pastor Father Robert Syrianey, began nine months previous
under the direction of one parishioner. A corp of key people started
a series of individual visits to 130 parish families. Out of these
interviews grew a list of common concerns and goals. Then, over
300 parishioners participated in a series of three parish meetings,
where these goals for the future were more clearly identified.
"Covenant Sunday" services included the signing by each
parishioner of the covenant, concluding with the offering of the
signed document as a burnt offering to God. Shortly thereafter,
groundbreaking took place in a barren field on top of a hill near
Floyd Avenue and Tower Road.
