Boys and girls, age nine or older, and having received their First Eucharist may serve at Masses. There can be opportunities to assist at weddings or funerals.

Ministry Responsibility Description

Brief description of ministry: Assist the priest in the celebration of the liturgy during Mass. Some of the duties of the servers are: carry the cross and processional candles, hold the book for the priest celebrant when he is not at the altar, present the bread, wine, and water to the priest and assist him receiving the gifts, and, on special occasions, carry the incense and censer.

Qualifications: Altar servers are between 9 and 18 years of age and display a desire to participate in an intimate way during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Servers must be members of St. Michael’s and have received the Sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation, and 1st Communion.

Training: Initial training is conducted twice a year during the fall and the spring. These classes are announced in the bulletin. Holy Day Liturgies for the Easter Triduum and Christmas Eve, which are restricted to high school age servers, have mandatory rehearsals.

Time Commitment: Altar servers are usually scheduled once per month to serve at a Mass. Servers volunteer for Christmas and Easter and other celebrations, e.g. Stations of the Cross.

Miscellaneous: If a server is unable to be at a scheduled Mass, it is that person’s responsibility to secure a replacement.
