Ministry Responsibility Description
Brief description of ministry: Lectors, through prayerful preparation, proclaim to the assembly of the people the Word of God in Holy Scripture. These Ministers are the people who represent the community at large in our public prayer. Lectors are scheduled for weekend Mass. Since as many as 900 people might attend a Mass, Lectors must be skilled in addressing large groups while focusing on an effective delivery.
Qualifications: A desire to proclaim the Lord’s word to the congregation. An ability to read clearly with expression. Public presentation experience helpful.
Training: Training for new Ministers of Proclamation is held twice per year. Training sessions are approximately 3 hours. Special preparation sessions are offered before Advent and Lent for the Christmas, Palm Sunday, and Easter celebrations. Some are optional and some are required. Reader workshops are offered periodically.
Time commitment: Lectors are scheduled for approximately one Mass per month and listed as an alternate at a second Mass in a month. Lectors are expected to spend time during the week prior to their scheduled Mass reading and studying the scripture in preparation for the Mass. Lectors should prepare both readings in the event the other Lector is not present at Mass.
Miscellaneous: If a Lector is unable to be at a scheduled Mass, it is that person’s responsibility to schedule a replacement.
